A NOTE ABOUT WATERPROOF FLOORING


Waterproof flooring protects the plank itself. It does not waterproof the basement.


It cannot stop water from entering through a foundation crack, plumbing failure, appliance leak, wall, or drainage problem. It also does not protect drywall, baseboards, insulation, or furniture.


Active leaks, visible mold, persistent dampness, or unresolved drainage concerns should be addressed before any finished flooring is installed.

1. Installing over an unresolved moisture problem

A slab may look clean while still having cracks, uneven areas, residue, coatings, or moisture conditions that require attention.


3. Choosing a product without checking the instructions


Confirm below-grade approval, moisture limits, vapor-control requirements, expansion spacing, acclimation rules, and approved underlayments for the exact product.


4. Adding an unapproved underlayment


More cushioning is not always better. Some products already include an attached pad, and adding another layer may create too much movement unless the manufacturer allows it.

Do I need a vapor barrier?


Possibly. Requirements depend on the product, concrete conditions, attached pad, installation method, and manufacturer instructions. An attached underlayment does not automatically serve the same purpose as a vapor barrier.


What happens if the basement floods?


Waterproof planks may resist damage, but water can still travel beneath the floor and into nearby building materials. The flooring may need to be removed so the slab and surrounding area can be inspected, cleaned, and dried properly.


Can I install SPC flooring myself?


Many SPC products use click-lock systems that may be suitable for experienced DIY homeowners. The more difficult work is often preparing the slab, planning the layout, making cuts, maintaining expansion space, and installing transitions.
